Salesforce Tower that was initially known as the Transbay Tower is a 1,070-foot (326 m) office skyscraper in the South of Market district of downtown San Francisco. It is one of the most famous landmarks of the city. Recently, lights were turned on at the top of the new Salesforce Tower.
The tip of the building was aglow, changing different shades of soft blues and purples, a psychedelic lava-lamp swirl of color among the towering, straight-lined buildings. The crown of the tower also incorporates three internal lighting systems. The scintillating colour display is the sight to behold.
A rainbow of colors lit up tiny little boxes at one point. The upper two-thirds of the building crown consist of perforated aluminum panels. The exterior of the aluminum panels will be lit with 11,000 LED lights, which will display low-resolution moving color imagery. The images would be a combination of pre-recorded images and those taken from cameras surrounding the City.
San Francisco-based LED artist Jim Campbell, who has illuminated spaces from SFMOMA to Hong Kong, has been assigned the task to turn the building in a night spectacle. The top six floors are covered in 11,000 LED lights that can display low resolution moving color imagery.
“The challenges for this work are truly unique with very little precedent. My goal is to create a work that brings the building to life as a dynamic element of the city, not to simply use the surface of the building as a video screen. I feel very lucky to have been given this opportunity to create a work for the city that I’ve lived in for over 30 years,” Campbell said in a statement.
