The retailer has fitted LED lighting across 1,100 stores of its estate including its premium, standard and newsagent sites. The project, which cost the retailer £2.5m to complete, will cut its carbon footprint by an estimated 3,500 kg per year and deliver lighting cost savings of 35%.
“We believe that switching to LED lighting is one of the most important innovations we can employ to boost our store sustainability programme,” said McColl’s chief operating officer Dave Thomas.
“Lighting accounts for almost a quarter of the total energy consumed in our stores and estimates suggest that lighting accounts for about 75% for the 41 million tonnes of CO2 generated each year by UK businesses. This is an important initiative which underlines our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint as well as our energy bills.
“We are known for our efficient operating model, and the energy cost savings we are able to realise with LED lighting are evidence of our ongoing efforts to create further efficiencies. Additionally, the quality and reliability of the lighting and the fresher feel they are giving to our stores has had positive feedback from customers and store colleagues alike.”
