Following in the footsteps of other metropolitan cities, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to do away with traditional ‘iron cage’ billboards and instead encourage unipole steel structures fitted with LED lights. The decision was taken as the civic top brass felt the existing billboards were not only occupying more road space than unipoles but had become a source of visual pollution.
The city has 15 unipoles, each of which has 48 square feet screen for displaying commercial products. But, under the new rules, the size of a unipole could be reduced to 35 square feet.
