Chennai Central initially known as Madras Central is the main railway terminus in the city of Chennai, formerly known as Madras. It is one of the most important railway hubs in INDIA. The main building of the railway station is a combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles has been declared as a heritage building. The latest development for the Chennai Central railway station is that it has got a make over by the installation of LED lighting. Basically, this has rendered the place brighter and greener.

The initiative was taken by Southern Railway in order to save money and decrease the carbon footprint generated by use of older and existing lights. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the LED lighting through video conferencing from New Delhi. The Southern railway changed 2,388 conventional lights with 2,402 energy efficient LED lights of varying wattages.

This project cost the southern railway Rs50lakh. However, the move was undertaken keeping in mind the fact it will reduce carbon emission effectively. The installment of LED lighting will cause a reduction in carbon emission of 262MT per year. This will save the tune of 60lakh units and Rs 60 lakh per month to Indian railways. Initiatives like these are quite fruitful and have serious positive impacts when considered long term.
