The City of Darwin in Australia is installing 10,000 LED lights on its street and public lighting network to replace the old lighting. The lighting will be connected and controlled by Telensa’s PLANet intelligent street lighting system.
Also, the project will be hosted by Amazon Web Services and it is touted to be one of the largest council run projects of its type in Australia. This project follows a Northern Territory Government initiative to transfer the control of street lights to councils, with some now contracting for LED and smart controls upgrades.
By opting for a system proven at mass scale across the world, the City of Darwin was able to move directly to complete replacement of the lighting further eliminating the need to run a pilot system.
Telensa PLANet is an end-to-end intelligent street lighting system, consisting of wireless nodes connecting individual lights, a dedicated wireless network owned by the city, and a central management application.
Additionally, the lighting system installed will overcome the cost of installation due to reduced energy and maintenance costs. It improves quality of service through automatic fault reporting and also turns streetlight poles into hubs for smart city sensors.
