India should be proud of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh country’s first ‘LED street light district’. East Godavari district or Toorpu Godavari jilla is a district in Coastal Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Its district headquarters is at Kakinada. The rural LED street lighting programme in the district comprising the installation of around 3.1 lakh LED street lights has been completed recently. The implementation of the LEDs is expected to save around 34 Million Units (MU) annually.
According to the Energy Efficiency Department, Hon’ble Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will declare the district as the first to be installed with 100 percent LED street lighting and the credit will be given to all the rural people on the occasion of Panchayat Raj Divas. Andra Pradesh, the Indian state is already ranked the best State in the implementation of energy efficiency and conservation programmes by the World Bank.
The LED project was supported by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). It was completed in five months. Chief Minister Naidu wanted coverage of all the 13 districts with over 28-30 lakh LED lights, which is expected to save around 333 MU of energy a year. The project has been implemented in the districts of East Godavari, Chittoor, Ananthapur, YSR Kadapa, Vizianagaram & Visakhapatnam.
According to officials, out of the total 50 lakh LED street lights installed in the countr y, AP has installed around 11.61 lakh which cover 20 percent of the total LED street lights. However, the big States such as Maharashtra, New Delhi, Rajasthan and Tamilnadu are trailing behind. Also, a special action plan is under the process that will be responsible for integrating the Minister’s Dash Board with Centralised Control Monitoring System (CCMS).
