Municipal Corporation of Gurugram signed an agreement with state owned Energy Efficiency Services Limited (ESSL) to install 48,568 street lights under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP).

“EESL shall replace over 48,568 conventional street lights with LED lights, which would lead MCG to save approximately 13 million units of electricity annually,” EESL said in a statement. The implementation is in accordance with the ‘Smart Cities’ initiative of the government of Haryana. This makes Gurugram to be the first city in the state to implement the project, the statement added.

As per the MoU, Gurugram administration will bear the entire upfront capital cost of upgradation of conventional streetlight fixtures with LED lights while EESL will carry out annual maintenance and replacement for 10 years. As per the 18th Electric Power Survey of the Central Electricity Authority CEA, the estimated energy consumption in Indian public lighting sector was 8,478 million units in 2012-13 and is constantly growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of seven percent.

“Keeping in mind this growth rate, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 100 cities National Programme on January 5, 2015 to convert conventional street and domestic lights with energy efficient LED lights,” EESL said. Under SLNP, EESL has been tasked to carry out replacement of 13.4 million conventional street lights across the country.  EESL has replaced over 2,60,000 street lights in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) area in Delhi, which has led to save 36 million units electricity annually, resulting in a reduction of over 29,000 tonnes of CO2, according to EESL
