Pink color mostly is associated with femininity and all girly things. However, the pink colour has another serious side to it. It depicts the serious struggle which is associated with the fight to find cure for breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and every Friday during October, the Larson Building in Downtown Yakima was lit up in pink, signifying community support to end this disease.

Dawn O’Polka, chief marketing and communications executive at Regional Health, said this about the decision to light the Larson: “We support the Lighting of the Larson project because the first step in combatting cancer is building awareness. We want to encourage our local communities throughout the Valley to support breast cancer research and early detection. And, we want to show support, for our patients and other women in our communities with breast cancer.”

The idea behind the lighting of the Larson building was by Steve Weise who is the owner of Leading Force Energy and Design Center. To first stage of lighting of the building has taken several years of research and fundraising. The expenditure of lighting buildings used to be expensive which has gone down tremendously with the use of new technology and solar-powered LED lights. “The capabilities of what the lighting system will be able to do are huge,” says Weise, “I see the opportunity to create 15-minute shows.”

Lighting the Larson in pink this October will be the first sponsorship that connects community and business on many levels. “These sponsorships provide a unifying asset to downtown,” says Andrew Holt, executive director at DAY. “It’s more than just lighting up a local landmark; it’s a way to connect the community with a cause.”
