LED lighting in Horticulture is totally taking over the market. Innumerable benefits such as the advantage of growing vegetables in enclosed spaces are rendered easy just by the use of LED Grow lights. Irrespective of the weather and the temperature veggies can be grown easily in closed rooms or sunlight deficient rooms.
Asda says it will now sell British tomatoes year-round, thanks to the use of supplementary LED lighting. The recent application of LED lighting in horticulture is done by Merseyside grower FlavourFresh which uses LED lighting across 12 hectares of glasshouse production, which yields just over 200 million tomatoes a year.
The installation of LED lighting has numerous benefits. The lighting helps reduce the total energy required by up to 35% through decreasing the need for excessive heating and ventilation. Production manager Andy Roe said: “I can say with confidence that by using this technology, I could grow a tomato absolutely anywhere – underground, in a tube carriage, on the moon.
“The beauty of this technology is that it hands complete control over to the growers, who can monitor levels and adjust accordingly to ensure the best quality products possible are hitting Asda’s shelves. This is the way forward for horticulturalists across the globe.”
Asda technical director Ian Harrison added: “Beyond the benefits to UK growers, this forward-thinking technology means not a single ounce of quality; taste or appearance is diminished in our tomatoes.”
