Plessey chose the January IPM Essen exhibition event as the platform to launch its new high-power grow-light range which the company believes could be very soon used as an alternative to or possibly a complete replacement of sodium lighting. The product’s name is Hyperion and it is the first LED grow light in the market that has been specifically designed to replace high-pressure sodium grow lights altogether. According to Jonathan Barton, Director of Grow Lights, the technology has been tested several times and it has proven every time that it is capable of aiding plants grow in a variety of different controlled environments. He further added, “Hyperion will make LED-based grow lighting a viable proposition for all commercially grown plant varieties. We will show prototypes at Essen and expect to be production ready by spring 2017, which is when the lights should be available in the UK. Prices are being finalized. There will be a family of lights, with the first outputting around 1,000 micromoles, equivalent to a 600W sodium grow light. The energy savings will be around 40% verses high-pressure sodium.”
Barton’s believe in this new product reflected in his statement when he went on to express how confident he was that Hyperion would prove to be the most efficient way of growing lights. The lights are basically hybrid lights that can be used along with sodium lights. The best part about the lights is that they do not overheat your heating system by overloading it.
