The City of Saint Paul is famous for its Cathedral of Saint Paul; a civic landmark and the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Paul and Minneapolis. In 1974, it was placed on the National Register of Historical Buildings in 1974
This over 100 years old building has huge scope of improvement to increases its longevity as an architect marvel, one of the key areas being the lighting system of the building. The Cathedral is huge and thus one of the foremost challenges was to make sure enough light units were available while at the same time keeping in mind energy-saving goals. Authorities of the Cathedral wanted to make sure that lighting of cathedral was decided upon with two top most priorities; reduced energy consumption and reduced maintenance cost without having to compromise on quality of light.
Premier Lighting Company took up the task of lighting up the Cathedral. They conducted an in-depth analysis of the present lighting and came to a conclusion that all of the light fixtures could be replaced and retrofitted to LED lighting. Fitting LED lights would not only reduce energy consumption by over 75% but would also improve life by 5-10 times. The most interesting part of the project was retrofitting the lighting in the high ceiling domes of the Cathedral. The central dome is over 180 feet and was lit with a combination of 500 watt halogen and 400 watt HID fixtures. The best part was that none of the previously existing fixtures were changed and yet Premier Lighting through its expertise could retrofit each of these fixtures to LED lighting.
