Tiruchirappalli railway division is one of the seven railway divisions of Southern Railway Zone (SR) of India. It has its administrative headquarters located at Tiruchirappalli. In their journey towards energy consumption and eco-friendly environment the Trichy railway division, has achieved success. It serves most of the districts of delta region and Central Tamil Nadu. A total of 154 stations, including all major stations in the division are being installed with 100% LED lighting.
The railways have already installed 8,000 LED lamps in railway quarters across the division. Moreover, 1,859 higher wattage lamps with 250 watts were replaced with 20 and 50 watts LED lamps. The subsequent installations have generated energy costs up to 2, 03,561 units amounting to Rs 15.41 lakh per year. The drive to replace all the traditional lights with LEDs has begun and has attained a great pace too. Not only are we going to save energy and reduce the carbon imprint on the environment but also aid in the reduction of cost. LEDs are also known to require less maintenance, therefore, this also saves on the cost of replacement.
Additionally, 603 service buildings are also provided with 100% LED lighting across Southern Railway, officials said. To supplement the energy conservation drive and implement renewable energy, 207 Kwp Solar panels have been commissioned during 2017-18. With this, Southern Railway has installed 402.45 Kwp Solar Panels so far, they added.
