Just a few years back it drove the shopkeepers and store owners crazy with all that expenditure on changing CFLs and incandescent installed at their stores. Moreover, it was a hassle replacing them repeatedly as they did not last long enough. However, this is changing rapidly as LED lighting is responsible for bringing about a revolution.

The advantages of installing LEDs are such as; it cuts down electricity bills, eliminates maintenance and decreases carbon footprint that eventually makes it a good long term investment. LED lights are 90% efficient. With LED lights customers use about 30% less electricity for lighting. As the consumption of electricity is reduced, you can opt for an alternate source like solar panels to produce your own clean electricity.

Taking a cue, Walmart India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart Inc, is planning to integrate sustainable resources such as solar energy, water harvesting, and recycling to run its stores in the country.

In order to improve its business as well as being environmentally and socially responsible, the company has retrofitted the lighting systems in all its stores with LED lights. This has helped reduce energy demand by 15-20 percent. The endless benefits of installing LEDs render them to be an appropriate choice and many more retail giants are opting for solar power to meet their increasing energy needs in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.

Walmart India has also installed rooftop solar in 17 of its best price stores which meet the 33 percent of the store’s energy requirement. Also, in the coming years, it aims to meet 40 to 50 percent of its energy demand through sustainable energy sources such as solar energy & LEDs. It has also set a goal to use 100 percent renewable power in the future.
