LG has launched Visible Disinfection Lighting, a functional LED light which uses the indoor light to deliver the effect of sterilization same as the sunlight. According to reports, the company has claimed that its 405 nanometre visible LED is able to sterilize indoor spaces by wiping out 99.9% of bacteria without using other chemicals when the light is switched on. Different sterilization modes can be set according to the contamination level.
Bacteria become extinct when exposed to sunlight for a long time due to a material called ‘porphyrin’ inside of bacteria that destroys its cells by reacting with certain wavelengths of sunlight. The company’s solution maximizes the use of a 405-nm wavelength, which porphyrin reacts to.
The product is not harmful for the human body; its sterilization feature can be used without any tension in places where people pass by or work such as restrooms or kitchen. The visible lighting is successfully tested from the Photobiological Safety Standard (IEC62471) of International Electrotechnical Commission, an international standard for electrical technology that it does not have any negative effects on the eyes and skin.
