Noida is all set to install 74,000 LED street lights very soon in an ecofriendly
move to save energy cost and promote green technologies. The state government is committed to promoting solar power and LED lighting technologies. Noida has joined the list of cities wherein conventional lights are replaced with smart LED street lights, which are considered 50% more efficient as compared to incandescent bulbs and High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) lighting.
In the first phase of the replacement process, the authority has already changed 400 of the 3,800 street lights along the 25km stretch of Noida-Greater Noida expressway. The lights are being replaced by Tata projects Ltd.
LEDs have taken over the traditional lighting space for various reasons, most notably their extended lifespan, reduced energy consumption and lower maintenance requirements. With the number of positive attributes, it is not surprising that the government is promoting its installation all across the country.
The Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) was launched by the Centre in January 2015 in order to replace 14 million conventional street lights with smart LED lighting solutions by 2019. The programme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), an arm of the power ministry.
