Under DELP, the government wants to replace 77 crore incandescent bulbs sold in India with LED bulbs. Implementing this is EESL that has so far partnered with various municipalities and power utility companies to employ LEDs in street lights and distribute LED bulbs in households at minimal rates.

To further increase its distribution reach for LED bulbs and strengthen the cause of the DELP programme to promote efficient lighting, enhance awareness on using LED to reduce electricity bill, and increase efficiency in domestic energy consumption, EESL has partnered with online retailer Snapdeal.

Under the campaign, Snapdeal will be selling LED bulbs at Rs99 and enable the Ministry of Power to increase distribution of LED bulbs through its online marketplace to its customers spread across over 5,000 towns and cities of India.

In a drive to make the programme more accessible to the public, EESL is hoping that the e-commerce platform will increase its reach to consumers across the country.

If DELP is implemented successfully, it is calculated to result in a reduction of 20,000 MW load, energy savings of 105 billion KWh and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions savings of 80 million tonnes every year. The annual saving in electricity bills will be close to Rs 40,000 crore, considering an average tariff of Rs 4 per kWh.
