In our quest to explore the LED lights manufacturing strength of the company as well as in the country, we, at LED World, came in contact with Rakesh Zutshi, the company’s Managing Director and President, Electric Lamp and Component Manufacturers’ Association of India (ELCOMA). Here is what he shared with us:
How fruitful is the government’s Make In India drive for the country’s LED lighting industry?
On the back of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s ambitious Make In India drive, more global investors are looking to collaborate with Indian LED manufactures. It has laid an impressive path for growth, innovations and technological enhancement in the Indian LED sector. After the launch of this initiative, manufacturing in LED lighting industry has already achieved considerable growth.
How has the Centre’s initiative like Make In India helped Halonix grow?
Adding wings to PM Modi’s ambitious Make In India programme, Halonix Technologies has already embarked on its mission to create a robust ecosystem in LED lighting manufacturing sector in India. We are today one of the top five players in energy-efficient lighting brands in the country. We are already instrumental in contributing significantly in the growth of the manufacturing of energy-efficient LED lights in India.
What is the core competency at Halonix?
As I said, Halonix has been a pioneer in lighting industry. We are proud to make our products in India and are one of the few companies to have an in-house self-certifying NABL laboratory. Ours is a focused lighting company with core competency for providing lighting solutions designed for Indian conditions. Our products excel in quality, performance and durability.
Which all lighting products/solutions Halonix has in its portfolio?
Our product range extends to both consumer lighting as well as institutional requirements. Halonix is pushing the credo of ‘Make In India’ through its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility based at Haridwar. How do you see the dependency of Indian LED industry over imported stuff?
At ELCOMA, we are working in unison to establish fruitful liaison with government bodies to support each other in matters connected with lighting industry and to create motivating environment to promote manufacturing in LED sector. It is due to the government’s promising programs such as Smart Cities, Smart India, Startup India as well as Make In India, already there has been a considerable decrease in import volumes of LED lighting products.
Despite such a big market, which all factors are hindering the Indian LED lighting industry?
Even though the LED market is growing considerably, there are a lot of factors which are affecting the industry. Problems like high cost of manufacturing, lack of awareness and low quality products being produced by illegal fly by night operators are among the key challenges currently being faced by lighting majors in India. However, the Government is doing commendable job to promote LED market segment by introducing many schemes like LED bulb distribution under domestic efficient lighting programme in Delhi, National Programme for LED-based Home and Street Lighting, apart from distributing free LED lights in rural areas. All these efforts are jointly promoting the growth of lighting sector with simultaneously providing level playing field to all the lighting manufactures of the country.
When it comes to components, by when can we become self-dependent?
At ELCOMA we aim to transform India into a global manufacturing and export hub of superior, but economical LED products and we are marching ahead with the dream of making our country self-dependent in LED components manufacturing. The organisation is instrumental in bringing several issues faced by the electric lamp and component manufacturers in the entire country to the fore. With a clear vision, we are working in unison to establish fruitful liaison with government bodies to support each other in matters connected with lighting industry.
How important is the role of Government for this?
We expect the next one decade will be crucial for the growth of Indian LED sector since the latest innovations are quickly replacing the older ones and a new round of revolution and transformation in technology have already gained momentum. We must seize this important opportunity to enable all the growth drivers in place to achieve leapfrog development in LED manufacturing sector. Obviously the role of the Government as facilitator is very important to achieve the desired growth rate.
Why is India hesitant on LED chip manufacturing? What support(s) do you expect from the Government on this front?
Being a nascent market, India is yet to realise its full potential in all the areas of LED components manufacturing. However, this is not the only reason why India is still hesitant on LED chip manufacturing. Currently, LED chip manufacturing is dominated by the bigger global players across the world, only since chip manufacturing is by far most capital intensive. The industry requires ample support from the government to take on the challenges thrown by the global manufactures. Moreover cheap import from China is another threat to LED chip manufacturing. It is therefore the government must discourage such imports by applying heavy import duties and then it should provide ample financial support to the manufacturers in the industry to transform the current scenario on LED chip manufacturing front.
