The Northeast Frontier Railway also known as NFR is one of the 17 railway zones in India. Its headquarters are located in Maligaon, Guwahati in the state of Assam, it holds the responsibility for rail operations in the entire Northeast and parts of West Bengal and Bihar. In order to curb carbon emission the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) has gone ahead and converted 48 stations which come under it into an eco-friendly zone.

The stations lights have been changed into 100% LED bulb lighting system. The initiative has significant advantage as this move will turn the environment green and also cut down the energy cost. According to the initiative another 60 stations will be converted into LED lighting system this year. The old and conventional light fittings like CFL, fluorescent tube lights, high pressure sodium vapour lamps etc. have been destocked during June 2016.

And 9W LED bulbs and 18W LED tube lights were introduced. The costs of these lights have been Rs. 1.03 crore. But due to their installation the annual power consumption will come down by 1.43MW approximately as told by NFR chief public relation officer Pranav Jyoti Sharma. Sharma said, “Energy consumption in NFR has decreased by 2.92% and 0.10% despite an increase of 4.71% and 2.11% in connected load during 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively because of the initiatives taken for energy savings.”
