The LED technology giant Osram has recently completed the replacment of conventional lights of the St. Peter’s Basilica with LED technology. The lighting upgrade took almost two years to be completed and successfully illuminated the interior of the church in all its magnificence, power and architectural complexity. Saint Peter’s is the largest church in the world and the center of Catholicism. The Revolution of LED touched Vatican City and they decided to upgrade the lighting at St Peter’s Basilica.

Around 100,000 powerful LEDs integrated into 700 custom-made luminaires have been installed. The luminaires have been arranged in a fashion that they remain unobtrusive as well as emit no UV radiation which protects the famous works of art. The newly installed digital lighting in St Peter’s Basilica is up to ten times brighter than before, as well as consumes 80 percent less energy.

The two-year project carried out by the German light company OSRAM was a challenge because getting that much artificial light to look aesthetically pleasing was a big task. Moreover, it was extremely important to do justice to the history and architecture of the square. The Vatican says the state-of-the-art lighting system is energy-saving as well as cost-efficient whilst simultaneously “enhancing the artistic richness of the basilica.” The newly installed light system has been inaugurated in January.
