Under the spearhead of Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) replaced close to 2 lakh conventional street lights with more efficient LED street lights. The project was a part of the Street Lighting National Programme and was completed with a success of gargantuan proportions. The project was implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited under the leadership of Piyush Goyal. LED lights were installed in the SDMC areas with a special focus on the installation in parks, at dark spots and replacement of the high mast lights. With this huge achievement SDMC has become the first civic body in the Capital city to replace around two lakh old street lights with LED lights. Such a large scale replacement ensured a saving of up to 6 crore 10 lakh units of electricity per year, which in turn saved around 54 per cent in electricity bill, a saving of Rs 124 crore in the project period and also cut down in release of Co2 gas in the atmosphere by approximately 44,000 tonne per year.
