Mobile carrier Verizon Communications Inc. has signed an agreement to purchase LED luminaire Start-up Company, Sensity Systems Inc. Under the deal, Sensity’s LED lighting conversion products will be added to Verizon’s ThingSpace Internet of Things (IoT) platform in order to continue Verizon’s push into the smart city. For now, Verizon’s ThingSpace platform includes connected-intelligent products for parking, lighting, traffic management and security.
Sensity focuses on LED conversions to create high-speed, sensor-based multiservice IoT platforms for cities. The company has 42 smart city installations worldwide that have allowed facility and municipal lighting owners to link energy efficiency and cost savings for public safety, parking control, asset management and analytics.
With the acquisition of Sensity, Verizon aims to accelerate the deployment of large-scale implementations for the digital transformation of cities, universities and venues. The company’s ThingSpace platform allows communities to increase economic development, drive citizen engagement and enable sustainability.
