Egmore railway station is one of the prominent landmarks in Chennai, which was lit up with a dynamic lighting solution to celebrate Independence week. The façade of the heritage building has been installed with a new LED lighting system with funds provided by the Southern Railways.
Many historical and government buildings such as the Parliament and Raj Bhavan have already been installed with colour changing lights in the capital of the country. However, this is the first time that a heritage building has been illuminated in Chennai despite having a lot of iconic buildings.
Moreover, this is the first railway station in Tamil Nadu to get LED lighting. Furthermore, the new lights can be scheduled depending on the time and occasion and Southern Railways will decide on the colour of lights every day.
As per the Railway officials, like Ripon building, Egmore station too will be illuminated with special colours on particular days. For example, tricolour on Independence Day and Republic Day, red colour on World AIDS Day and so on.
The Egmore Railway station is 111 years old. It was built at a cost of 17 lakh in 1908. The lighting has been provided in a move to increase tourism. The railway station already witnesses an average patronage of 3,50,000 commuters per day.
Façade and architectural lighting is trending presently, as these lighting solutions helps a building turn more attractive as well as beautify the architecture in a very cost-effective way. As per reports, there are plans to install façade lighting at the Tiruchy railway station and Chennai international airport also.
