Lighting plays an integral role in today’s world. Therefore, it is imperative that we conserve it. With that initiative the Assam government will install 10,000 LED street lights in order to curb power wastage. LED lighting are known to be cost-effective and energy saving.

The lights will be installed under Project Jyoti, which is formulated by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, and it will be implemented under Guwahati Smart City project.

“We aimed to install at least 10,000 poles within seven months in the city. The project costs Rs 15.4 crore. A tender notice for the project has been published and work will start very soon,” the managing director of Guwahati Smart City Ltd, M. Angamuthu, told this correspondent.

Angamuthu said: “Good lighting on the city’s streets will ensure road safety, citizens’ security and personal safety. Moreover it enhances appeal of urban areas as commercial and cultural centres by improving the ambience. Guwahati Smart City Ltd has undertaken the responsibility to improve street lighting and hence it has taken up projects like Project Jyoti.”

According to an official, at present the total length of roads under the GMC is 2,210km including all major roads, lanes and bylanes. Of this only 26 per cent roads are lit through streetlight projects and the rest of the city roads remain in the dark.
