The electricity department in Panaji will soon acquire around 40,000 LED streetlights in order to enhance safety across the city and improve lighting in the streets. The approval for the lighting upgrade has been given by the expenditure finance committee. The total cost of the lighting work would be around Rs 37 crore.
Power Minister Nilesh Cabral also confirmed the need for making the additional requirement. While the programme of replacing conventional streetlights bulbs with LED lighting solutions started two years back, few areas have not been covered yet.
Also, it is has been stated that the power department will ensure that streetlights in the industrial areas will also be replaced with new lighting. In order to fulfill that demand, around 40,000 additional streetlights will be needed. The total requirement was estimated at 2.45 lakh LED streetlights. The state government has spent almost Rs 99 crore on LED streetlights.
Also, there were several complaints regarding the streetlights as many have stopped working. The company that was supplying the LEDs is also going to undertake maintenance.
