Wi-Fi Lighting is one of the best home innovations in the smart home industry. But with all technology comes corporate responsibility. Handling customer data and keeping it safe is important but it is a security practice that is commonly ignored. The security concerns raised by industry experts come from the use of Infrared technology.

Infrared technology makes use of wave spectrum that can be remotely controlled. Hackers can potentially hack into the infrared network used by home owners to connect to their Wi-Fi lighting and steal sensitive information. Anything that is stored in a computer connected to the same Wi-Fi network as smart lights can be stolen potentially.

Smart lights were scared in the Indian market prior to sudden drop in prices in 2019 due to cheaper means of production and increased awareness about the products. According to Anindya Maiti who co-authored “Light Ears: Information Leakage via Smart Lights” the industry needs to address security concerns in Wi-Fi lighting technologies.

Smart bulbs currently command a market worth $8 billion globally and it is expected to grow to $28 billion within the next 9 years. It is important to invest in good security practices and Indian manufacturers are slowly addressing the security concerns raised by experts.
